It was six days of live action on field with fantastic dribbling skills, spectacular saves and flamboyant tackles showcased. Eight teams from in and around Pune locked horns to lift the prestigious GD Birla trophy. The second edition of the tournament was held at the BK Birla football ground in Pune. The participating teams were Birla School, Kalyan; The Cathedral Vidya School, Lonavala; Sahyadri School, Pune; River Dale School, Pune; The Heritage Public School, Talegaon; Army Public School, Dehu Road; and both the ‘A’ team and ‘B’ team of the host school.
The final match of the tournament indeed proved to be a clash of the titans in which team ‘A’ of the host school clashed with those from the Cathedral Vidya School for the title. After a tough match, with both the teams unable to win a goal, it was a draw in the prescribed and extra time. Finally, the Cathedral School emerged the winners in a tie breaker penalty shootout.
Sourabh Patil of BKBCE bagged the individual trophy for the highest goal scorer and D Gala, the captain of the Cathedral school, was adjudged the best goalkeeper. Aditya Nair (Cathedral School) was selected as the most valuable player of the tournament. Indian, international footballer Mr Noushad Moosa who was the chief guest of the final match and the closing ceremony gave away the prizes. Lt Col Prasad, the principal of the Cathedral School, was the guest of honour.
The second edition of the GD Birla football tournament added another feather to the cap of the dynamic principal Dr SK Sanyal, who himself was an outstanding footballer in his prime (representing Maharashtra on many occasions in the Santosh trophy). In this venture he was ably supported by the Vice Principal Mr Parveen Zear and the charged up Sports Dept.
